Megan is one of the younger employees within Borrie who combines her work with studying. A bachelor’s degree in accountancy for theory and, in addition, an internal training for AA in practice means that she quickly gained a lot of experience in accountancy. Before Megan started at Borrie, she worked for several years for one of the larger accountancy firms, so better than anyone she knows the differences between working at ‘the big four’ and at an SME organisation like Borrie. In particular, the flexibility of colleagues is very different.
“Planning is always a challenge in accountancy; at Borrie, a team keeps each other on their toes when it comes to planning, but colleagues take over tasks from you when it becomes clear that the number of planned hours is compromised. Not being so rigid with the planning means you actually get more done. I really like that way of working,” says Megan.
Whereas she was used to being regularly told that there was no slack in the planning and she just had to finish her work within the pre-planned number of hours, colleagues at Borrie do everything they can to work together on assignments as efficiently as possible.
A genuine team spirit is Borrie’s strength; you can always count on good support, and Megan did not recognise this at previous employers. This was also because there was a lot of staff turnover at the large accountancy firm where she previously worked. Megan enjoys visiting clients and working closely with a team. For a number of clients, her duties have expanded due to unforeseen changes in the team, expanding her responsibilities considerably.
These are the moments when Megan knows that she has chosen the most enjoyable profession and it therefore motivates her immensely to study to complete a fine education. It proves to her that there is confidence in who she is and what she does, and that she has learnt a lot in a short time at Borrie.
Knowing that you are taken care of when you think you are not going to make the schedule gives security, which makes you perform better. The door is always open, and then someone is actually there for you.
